Survey: UK house prices up 0.5 pct in March

A major British lender says house prices rose by 0.5 percent in March comopared with February but the market showed no sign of beginning a strong recovery.
Nationwide Building Society, the third-largest U.K. mortgage lender, said Thursday that brought the average just 0.1 percent higher than a year earlier.
Nationwide economist Robert Gardner said demand remain soft while a low interest rates and a stabilization of the labor market has prevented a rise in forced sales. He said the number of sales was likely to remain low for the rest of the year while prices may edge lower.
