Cameroon's army says they killed 18 pirates suspected of storming a bank with grenades and then taking off in a high-speed boat chase that turned into a gunbattle.
Gen. Sarli Mohamadou said Tuesday soldiers found equipment belonging to the bank on the suspects' speedboat. Mohamadou said at least 25 gunmen participated in the attack in the seaside city of Douala late Friday.
Cameroon's state broadcaster said at least seven people were killed. Bank officials said the robbers made off with about $400,000. Two gunmen were arrested after the attack.
Officials said the incident resembled another one three years ago that was blamed on pirates from neighboring Nigeria. Pirate attacks have risen around Nigeria in recent years.
