Putin in Slovenia to discuss South Stream pipeline

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has arrived in Slovenia to reassure its officials that the construction of a pipeline which is to carry Russian natural gas to Europe is not in jeopardy as some Kremlin officials have suggested.
Putin's talks Tuesday are to focus on clearing up the last financial hurdles for the South Stream project that would transport up to 63 billion cubic meters (2.2 trillion cubic feet) of gas a year under the Black Sea with one arm going through Slovenia when completed in 2015.
Russia's minister in charge of energy recently indicated that Kremlin could drop the project altogether, but his associates refuted that statement.
The South Stream is dealing a blow to the planned rival Nabucco pipeline, which is supported by the U.S. and the EU.
