PM to speak as spring election looms in Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper will urge the opposition to support his latest budget plan on Wednesday but a spring election in Canada is all but certain after opposition parties said they will vote against it.
Harper is set to speak to the media in Parliament at 11:30 a.m EDT (1530 GMT). A senior government official said Harper will urge the opposition to put political opportunism aside. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly.
Harper needs the support of at least one party to stay in power but all three opposition parties rejected Harper's budget after it was announced Tuesday.
A vote on the budget is expected either Thursday or Friday. If defeated, an election will be triggered and will be held on May 2 or May 9.
