Players have taken power from clubs, says O'Neill

Former Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has told a British parliamentary inquiry into football that power has moved from the clubs to players.
He says that shift was displayed when Wayne Rooney handed in a transfer request at Manchester United in October and ended up being rewarded with a more lucrative five-year deal.
O'Neill told Tuesday's hearing that "control has left the football clubs and gone to the players and therefore the agents ... players are now in charge now, which is a bit of a shame really."
The Northern Irishman says when he started out in football "the player had no control whatsoever" and "now it has gone full circle."
O'Neill surprisingly quit Villa just before the start of the Premier League season.
