Italy to propose moratorium on nuke energy

Italy's government is set to propose a one-year moratorium on plans to introduce long-banned nuclear energy in the country following the radiation leaks at Japan's nuclear plant.
The ANSA news agency quoted development minister Paolo Romani as saying he would propose the moratorium on studies for possible nuclear sites in Italy at a cabinet meeting Wednesday.
Anti-nuclear energy lawmakers said the move was purely designed to stymie a referendum set for later this year on the government's nuclear plans. They say that by taking the issue off the political agenda for a year, Italians won't be as likely to vote in the referendum.
In a 1987 referendum following the Chernobyl disaster, Italians overwhelmingly rejected nuclear power.
