Russia applies to hold figure skating worlds

Russia has applied to host this year's figure skating world championships, which were to be held in Tokyo this week but were canceled in the wake of the recent earthquake.
The Russian figure skating federation says it sent a proposal to the International Skating Union to hold the event.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin spoke in favor of the bid, saying "this is not a very expensive event and we are capable of taking care of all the expenses."
Russia held the worlds in 2005 at the Luzhniki sports complex in central Moscow. But the ITAR-Tass news agency cited federation president Alexander Gorshkov as saying that the most likely venue for the championships would be the Megasport arena, which is newer but far from the center.
