Russia criticizes efforts to stem Afghan drugs

Russia's drug czar says Afghanistan's drug production poses a threat to humanity, and he is questioning why expensive efforts to fight it haven't worked.
Afghanistan produces most of the world's opium, the raw ingredient used to make heroin. While the U.S. and its NATO allies have funneled money into the country to stem production, opium poppy cultivation remained stable in 2010 and rising prices could cause a spike in the crop this year.
Viktor Ivanov told reporters Tuesday that large amounts of tax payers' money is being spent but that production remains "vast" and there is no steady declining trend.
He said: "It makes one wonder and makes one think."
