Lawmakers approve Spanish military action in Libya

Spain's Parliament has overwhelmingly approved the prime minister's decision to take part in the U.S.-led coalition enforcing a no-fly zone over Libya.
Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's request was approved Tuesday in a 336-3 vote, with one abstention.
Spain is contributing four F-18 fighter jets, a Boeing 707 refueling plane, a submarine, a frigate and a maritime surveillance plane.
The F-18s patrolled Libyan air space Tuesday and two did so Monday. Up to 500 Spanish soldiers will take part in the operation.
Spain is required to seek parliamentary approval for its forces to take part in a military operation abroad, but they can be deployed prior to the approval in an emergency.
