Gov't offensive creates way for Somalis to get aid

An official in East Africa says a recent offensive by the Somali government against strongholds of an al-qaida-linked Islamist group has opened key corridors for humanitarian groups to reach populations in need of aid.
Mahboub Maalim, executive secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, a group of six East African countries, says he has asked humanitarian agencies to move with urgency to provide assistance to Somalis.
The U.N. says drought is compounding the problems of 2.4 million Somalis affected by conflict and in need of aid.
An African Union-led push against insurgents began in mid-February. Somalia has been mired in chaos since 1991.
