Philippine lawmakers impeach top anti-graft prober

Philippine lawmakers have impeached the country's chief anti-graft investigator in what new President Benigno Aquino's backers say is a victory in efforts to remove an obstacle to prosecuting his predecessor and other top officials for alleged massive corruption.
After debating into the early hours of Tuesday, 212 lawmakers from the House of Representatives voted to impeach Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez.
She has been accused of failing to investigate former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, top generals and other officials for alleged graft.
Arroyo, now a House member, led 46 lawmakers in voting against impeachment.
Corruption has been a politically explosive issue for some time in the Philippines, a nation long gripped by crushing poverty.
