President Barack Obama is praising Chile's peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy and says the South American country is an example for nations in the Middle East that are now going through that process.
Egypt recently toppled its longtime leader and the Egyptian people voted on amendments to the constitution over the weekend.
Obama also had praise for all of Latin America. He says the region is more important to U.S. prosperity and security than ever before and praised it for working together on issues ranging from security to global prosperity.
Obama says the region is one that's on the move, proud of its progress and ready to take on a larger role in world affairs.
Obama spoke Monday in Santiago, Chile, the third stop on his three-country goodwill tour of Latin America. Chile was led by a dictator from 1973-1990.
