Merkel optimistic about chances in German votes

Chancellor Angela Merkel says she is optimistic about her conservatives' chances in upcoming German regional elections, despite jitters over nuclear energy that have prompted a policy switch.
Merkel faces a closely fought race Sunday in the southwestern state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, which her party has governed for nearly 60 years. Neighboring, opposition-held Rhineland-Palatinate also votes.
Merkel said Monday her party's victory in a lower-key vote Sunday in Saxony-Anhalt, in eastern Germany, provides a "tailwind" for the upcoming votes. She says people there concentrated on local issues and voters elsewhere will too.
Japan's nuclear reactor crisis prompted Merkel to suspend an unpopular decision extending the life of Germany's nuclear plants and order seven old reactors switched off, at least temporarily.
