Japanese organizers have told the International Skating Union they cannot host the world figure skating championships this year and the sport's governing body plans to select a new site for the competition by the end of this week.
The championships were scheduled to begin this week in Tokyo but were postponed due to the earthquake and tsunami that have left Japan in crisis.
ISU president Ottavio Cinquanta tells The Associated Press he has asked members capable of hosting the worlds in late April or early May to send in their offers by Tuesday, and the ISU council will then vote Wednesday or Thursday.
Cinquanta says he is hoping to have "at least three or four" candidates, and "possibly as many as seven or eight."
