Spain court mulls legalizing new Basque party

Spain's Supreme Court is hearing arguments on whether to grant legal status to a new Basque pro-independence party that says it rejects violence by the separatist group ETA.
The Spanish government argues the new party called Sortu is a repackaged version of ETA's outlawed political wing Batasuna and does not really reject violence as a political tool. It wants this party barred as well.
A special Supreme Court panel met Monday to hear from both sides and could decide this week or next on letting Sortu register as a legal party.
ETA declared a permanent cease-fire in January but the government insists it lay down its weapons.
Sortu wants to participate in the Basque leg of nationwide municipal elections in May.
