KMT to avoid role in anti-Chen drive

The opposition Kuomintang will not get directly involved in an anti-President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) drive initiated by former Democratic Progressive Party chairman Shih Ming-te, but is supportive of such an action, a high-ranking KMT official said yesterday.
Tseng Yung-chuan (曾永權), executive director of the KMT Central Policy Committee, said the KMT would not rein in its members or followers who want to support the movement demanding that Chen step down, but will not take part in the campaign directly in order to avoid providing Chen and the DPP administration with an opportunity to accuse the KMT of orchestrating "party-to-party struggle."
Tseng said that since the KMT has been long considered by Chen and the DPP administration as a sworn enemy, participation in Shih's movement might provide Chen and his government with an opportunity to blur the focus of the movement.
