Report: Convicted Puerto Rico senator resigns

A Puerto Rican politician has finally accepted demands he resign from the territory's Senate due to a bribery conviction. That's according to the local newspaper El Nuevo Dia.
The paper's website reports that Sen. Hector Martinez signed his resignation Sunday. It says he will have 15 days to step down.
Martinez and his attorney Abbe D. Lowell did not immediately return e-mails and calls for comment.
Gov. Luis Fortuno demanded Martinez resign after a federal jury convicted him of taking favors from a businessman who would have benefited from bills Martinez introduced.
Martinez had balked at resigning and some senators backed his stance.
Sentencing for Martinez is scheduled for June 7. Lowell has said he will appeal.
