Police flood Saudi capital ahead of protests

Hundreds of police have deployed on the streets of the Saudi capital ahead of planned protests calling for democratic reforms in the kingdom.
The security turnout highlights authorities' concerns about people gathering after Friday prayers. At least three protesters and one policemen were wounded Thursday when police opened fire to disperse a protest in the country's east where minority Shiites live.
Although protests have so far been confined to small demonstrations in that area, activists have been emboldened by other uprisings sweeping the Middle East. They have set up online groups calling for protests in Riyadh on Friday.
Police blocked roads and set up random checkpoints in the capital, searching residents around a central mosque ahead of prayers.
