Taiwan to help African countries improve banana cultivation

Academia Sinica, Taiwan's top research institution, will assist African countries in improving the disease-resistance capability of bananas by authorizing a transfer of technology to the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF).

A technology-transfer agreement signing ceremony was held at Academia Sinica Friday, with its Vice President Michael Lai and AATF Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mpoko Bokanga signing the agreement.

An Academia Sinica official noted that bananas are a main staple in African countries; however, bacterial wilt disease has seriously affected crops.

To help Africa cultivate more disease-resistant bananas, Academia Sinica has decided to transfer technology developed at the institution to the AATF based on humanitarian grounds, the official added.

The AATF, established in Great Britain in 2003, is a transnational philanthropic organization dedicated to transferring global technologies to African farmers through technology-transfer contracts in order to improve food security and farmers' livelihood in Africa.
