Marin Cilic gave a boost to Croatia's hopes of reaching the Davis Cup quarterfinals by beating Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (6) on Sunday to level the first-round series at 2-2.
Cilic converted five out of 12 break points, and lost his serve only once while leading 2-0 in the third set. Kohlschreiber trailed 7-6 in the third set tiebreaker, hitting an easy volley out.
"I played a lot of matches against Kohlschreiber and knew exactly what I had to do," Cilic said. "I served extremely well, played aggressive. It was very important to start well because there was some pressure on me, knowing that if I lose there won't be any way back."
Kohlschreiber said: "I wasn't able to keep playing on the same level with him in the beginning. In the third set I was more aggressive, but still lost the tie breaker."
The International Tennis Federation said Sunday that Croatia's Ivo Karlovic broke the world record for the fastest serve during a Davis Cup match against Germany.
He struck a 251 kph (156 mph) serve in the fourth set of a doubles game on Saturday, breaking Andy Roddick's previous record of 249 kph (155 mph). The American set the previous record in the Davis Cup tie against Belarus in Charleston in 2004 while playing against Vladimir Voltchkov.
Karlovic and Ivan Dodig lost the doubles against Christopher Kas and Philipp Petzschner in five sets.
The final reverse singles match took place later Sunday when Karlovic played Petzschner.
