Taipei City: Ruling lawmakers concerned over New Party intentions

The New Party, a small opposition party aligned with the pro-Kuomintang (KMT) camp, said yesterday it might nominate candidates in urban areas in the next legislative election, a move KMT lawmakers said could hurt their chances of victory.

New Party Chairman Yok Mu-ming told reporters that his party has not yet determined the party's nominations in the election, scheduled for the end of 2011 or January 2012, but he said it did not rule out the possibility of having urban-area nominees.

If the New Party were to make such a move, it would take away votes from ruling KMT candidates, said KMT Legislator Chiang Nai-shin.

Tsai Cheng-yuan, another KMT lawmaker, also expressed concern over the New Party's likely move but felt that the New Party's entry into the race would not necessarily have an impact on every electoral district.
