UN chief concerned about Darfur hostilities

A U.N. spokesman says Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is concerned about the effect that ongoing hostilities in Sudan's Darfur region are having on humanitarian efforts in the African country.
Martin Nesirky said Friday that Ban is urging government and rebel forces in Darfur to respect international humanitarian law and individual rights, reminding them that ongoing fighting could harm current peace efforts.
The spokesman says Ban is asking the Sudanese government to ensure its troops cooperate with the area's peacekeeping mission and humanitarian groups in delivering aid and protecting civilians. He's also calling on the government and rebels to step up efforts to reach a cease-fire soon.
