Three European men have been indicted on federal charges of illegally importing Chinese-made ammunition drums for AK-47 assault rifles to an arms dealer in upstate New York.
Britons Gary Hyde and Paul Restorick and German native Karl Kleber were accused Friday of buying the drum magazines in China and altering them to make it appear they were made in Bulgaria. Federal law prohibits importation of the Chinese-made ammo containers.
Federal authorities say 5,700 drums were purchased in 2008 by Anthony DiChario, a dealer in suburban Rochester who says he didn't know they came from China.
Kleber's detention hearing Friday was postponed, and his attorney declined to comment. Hyde was being held in Nevada and Restorick's whereabouts were unknown. The charges carry a potential 20-year prison sentence.
