South Korea midfielder Park Ji-sung is retiring from international football, coach Cho Kwang-rae confirmed on Friday.
The 29-year-old Park won his 100th cap in the Asian Cup semifinal loss to Japan on Tuesday and was widely expected to announce his retirement after the tournament. The Manchester United player has called a news conference in Seoul on Monday.
Park was not in the lineup on Friday for the 3-2 win over Uzbekistan in the third-place match.
Cho said before the game he was concerned about Park's general fitness and was focusing on "injury prevention."
After the match, Cho said Park and defender Lee Young-pyo "are going to retire today," adding that they did "a remarkable job" for the national team.
Cho admitted the two would be missed, and singled out tournament topscorer Koo Ja-cheol as someone who might fill Park's shoes.
