Germany strives to be leader in data privacy

Germany's justice minister says her country should lead the way in setting international data protection standards and is praising WikiLeaks for helping spark a debate on the issue in the United States.
Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, who has clashed with U.S. internet giants such as Google and Facebook over privacy issues, said Friday that a new German foundation will explore how high data security standards can be used as a competitive advantage.
She underlined the importance of increased dialogue with the U.S. to better understand the "different legal cultures" of data protection on opposite banks of the Atlantic.
Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger thanked WikiLeaks for bringing concern over privacy regulation to the forefront in the U.S.
