Irish to learn national election date next week

Ireland's prime minister says he will dissolve parliament next Tuesday and name a new date for an early national election.
Prime Minister Brian Cowen made the announcement Friday in a radio interview.
Cowen has resigned as leader of the country's long-dominant Fianna Fail party and won't be leading its election campaign. That role falls to former Foreign Affairs Minister Micheal Martin, who won the leadership on Wednesday.
Cowen had set a previous election date of March 11 but the opposition wants an quicker election.
Later Friday, the upper house of parliament debates a Finance Bill that will raise taxes and slash spending to comply with terms of a (EURO)67.5 billion ($91 billion) international bailout loan.
