Fire on Indonesian passenger ferry; dozens trapped

A ferry carrying hundreds of passengers caught fire in Indonesia early Friday, killing at least two people and trapping dozens of others inside.
Many were safely evacuated to another ship, said Bambang Ervan, a spokesman for the Transportation Ministry, but dozens of others were still trapped six hours later.
Some passengers were seen jumping into the sea to escape the flames.
The accident occurred soon after the ferry left Merak port on Java island on its way to neighboring Sumatra, Ervan said.
Ferries are a main source of transportation in Indonesia, an archipelago nation with more than 17,000 islands and 235 million people.
Accidents are common due to overcrowding and poor safety standards.
