Tunisian PM names independents to key gov't posts

Tunisia's prime minister has named three independent ministers to key posts in the country's new interim Cabinet, removing ministers from the former ruling party whose presence has stoked street protests.
Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi will stay on in the new Cabinet, despite demonstrators' calls over the last 10 days for his ouster.
The naming of independent ministers to the interior, foreign and defense Cabinet posts appeared to be a bid to calm the demonstrations that have wracked Tunisia since Jan. 14 by citizens angry over the continued presence of ministers from the former ruling RCD party of ex-dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
Ben Ali, who had ruled Tunisia for 23 years, was driven from power by the anti-government protesters on Jan. 14 and fled to Saudi Arabia.
