WTO chief looking for acceleration in trade talks

The head of the World Trade Organizations says he hopes key commerce ministers meeting in Switzerland this week will commit to accelerating talks on a new global trade deal.
Pascal Lamy says he will push ministers from some 25 countries to signal their backing for a completion of the so-called Doha round of talks that have been ongoing for 10 years.
Lamy told reporters Thursday that the encounter Saturday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos will be a "touching base meeting."
He says an agreement on key issues could be reached by Easter in time to finalize the Doha round this year.
Among those taking part in the talks are U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, China's Commerce Minister Chen Deming, and EU trade chief Karel De Gucht.
