Report: Marine's killer may have been using drugs

A U.S. military report suggests an Afghan security contractor convicted in the fatal shooting a U.S. Marine was a frequent drug user and may have smoked opium or hashish hours before the killing in one of Afghanistan's top opium-producing regions.
The report obtained by The Associated Press through a Freedom of Information Act request also hints that drug use was rampant among the private security guards for an Afghan construction company that Lance Cpl. Joshua Birchfield's unit spotted about an hour before he was slain.
One of those contractors is now serving a 15-year prison sentence in the February killing of the 24-year-old Westville, Indiana, man. The U.S. Naval Criminal Investigative Service's report quotes one of Birchfield's fellow Marines saying those contractors routinely used drugs on the job.
