Italian soldier killed in Afghanistan

Officials say an Italian soldier has been killed by sniper fire in Afghanistan.
Maj. Stefano Salis of the chief of staffs office in Rome said the soldier was slain while on duty in a guard tower Friday at an Italian base in the Gulistan district in western Farah province.
Italy has some 3,500 soldiers in the NATO force in Afghanistan.
Italy's Sky TG24 TV, reporting from Afghanistan, says New Year's Eve celebrations for Italy's contingent were immediately canceled in mourning.
Foreign Minister Franco Frattini says the best way to honor Italians killed in Afghanistan is to maintain the country's commitment there while aiming to transfer security duties to the Afghan army and police.
