Brazil's top court would weigh Battisti case

Brazil's president is expected to announce a decision on whether to grant political asylum to Italian fugitive Cesare Battisti.
But Supreme Court president Cezar Peluso tells the Folha de S. Paulo newspaper that justices must determine if reasons given for Battisti's potential asylum would be allowed under an extradition treaty between Brazil and Italy.
With the top court in recess, that means if Battisti is given asylum, as is widely expected, his case would likely not be heard until February.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is expected to announce a decision on asylum Friday _ his last day in office.
Battisti, a former leftist rebel, was convicted in absentia for four political murders carried out in the 1970s.
