Estonia to enter new era with euro switchover

Estonians are preparing for historic New Year's celebrations as the tiny Baltic country begins phasing in the euro on Jan. 1.
Estonia will become the 17th nation in the euro area and the first former Soviet republic to adopt the common currency.
Finance Ministry officials have said that the switchover should proceed flawlessly after the clock strikes midnight Saturday and the first bank machines begin spitting out euro notes.
The inclusion of Estonia into the euro zone takes place at a time of deep crisis for the 12-year-old currency after Greece and Ireland had to be rescued from potential insolvency.
