Yemen releases hundreds of Shiite rebels

Yemen released hundreds of detained Shiite rebels on Thursday as part of a ceasefire in their yearslong conflict, the government and rebels said.
A total of 500 members of the Shiite Hawthi rebel movement are to be freed in the release that began Thursday, mediated by the Arab nation of Qatar, which also brokered the ceasefire in February.
In return, the embassy said the rebels are expected to "surrender weaponry seized during the armed conflict."
Hawthi spokesman Mohammed Abdel-Salam, speaking to The Associated Press, said 428 rebels had been freed so far.
The Hawthi Shiite tribesman in Yemen have waged an on-and-off struggle against the government for the last six years. Prisoner releases come periodically.
