Pro-European parties in Moldova form alliance

Three pro-European parties have formed an alliance that will take one of Europe's poorest countries closer to Europe, but the country may still remain in political deadlock.
The Alliance for European Integration formed Thursday has European integration as its top priority. Formed one month after Nov. 28 inconclusive ballot, it is almost the same alliance that governed Moldova from Sept. 2009 until the elections.
The alliance has 59 seats, two short of what it needs to elect Moldova's president.
The pro-Moscow Communists, which have 42 seats in the 101 seat legislature, said Thursday they will not give the alliance the votes it needs for president. This could keep Moldova mired in political deadlock it has been in since Communists lost elections in April 2009.
