Brazil weighs asylum for fugitive Battisti

Brazil's president is weighing political asylum for Italian fugitive Cesare Battisti, wanted for murders in his home country.
Battisti, a former leftist rebel, was convicted in absentia for two political murders carried out in the 1970s. He was accused of two other killings.
The office of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva says he'll make a decision before he hands over power to a successor Saturday.
Battisti has maintained his innocence, saying Italy's government was persecuting him.
Italy has pressed for his extradition since he was arrested in Brazil in 2007.
Battisti has been on the run since escaping from an Italian prison in 1981 while awaiting trial when he was a member of a far-left group.
