Rights group: 39 Uzbeks died of torture in prisons

A respected rights group in authoritarian Uzbekistan says 39 people have died of torture in prisons this year.
The Independent Human Rights Defenders Group said Thursday that prison authorities often return bodies to relatives in sealed coffins to conceal torture.
The group also says that at least 370 peaceful Muslims, including dozens of women, have been convicted and jailed on trumped-up charges of membership in radical Islamic groups.
It says the defendants are routinely tortured and tried in closed trials throughout the ex-Soviet nation.
Uzbek officials were not available for comment.
President Islam Karimov's government has been criticized for its brutal suppression of a 2005 uprising and relentless repression of religious groups and critics.
