Health of hospitalized Gen. Jaruzelski improving

A hospital official says the health of Poland's last communist leader, Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski, is improving.
The director of an Interior Ministry hospital in the northern city of Olsztyn, Tadeusz Zechowicz, said Thursday the 87-year-old's condition is improving "daily."
Zechowicz told reporters that Jaruzelski was hospitalized Saturday with pneumonia and heart problems. He said his condition initially was life threatening.
In 1981 Jaruzelski imposed martial law in Poland, intending to crush the national Solidarity freedom movement that eventually ousted communists from power in 1989.
In 2009 Jaruzelski had surgery for a face tumor, and he had been hospitalized with pneumonia and heart problems a year earlier.
