Malaysia court sentences 2 to jail over baby sale

A prosecutor says a Malaysian court has sentenced a doctor and his assistant to one year in jail for selling a newborn boy.
Prosecutor Dzul Iswari Mohamad Jaafar says a court in southern Johor state found Robert Luk and his assistant Suleiman Salim guilty Wednesday of selling the baby to a couple for 10,000 ringgit ($3,200) in 2005.
The two men were accused of altering the birth certificate of the boy, born to a poor woman who wanted to give him up for adoption. The offense _ unlawful transfer of control of a child _ carries a maximum penalty of five years in jail.
Dzul Iswari said Thursday that it was the first such successful prosecution. Several people have been arrested in recent years over salesof babies to childless couples.
