Euro barely changed after weak US data

The euro was barely changed against the dollar in thin year-end trading on Wednesday, despite a pair of weaker-than-expected economic reports from the United States.
The euro bought $1.3121 in early afternoon European trading, slipping off an earlier session high of $1.3157 and trading just above the $1.3117 it bought in New York late Tuesday. The British pound was up to $1.5392 from $1.5374 and the dollar slipped to 82.10 Japanese yen from 82.35 yen.
Tuesday saw unexpectedly weak reports on U.S. consumer confidence and the country's housing market.
However, the European currency _ whose membership will expand from 16 to 17 when Estonia joins on Saturday _ has been weighed down recently as Europe continues to struggle with its government debt crisis.
That has helped the dollar rise about 8 percent versus the euro since early November. The euro traded as low as $1.3085 early in Wednesday's session.
