A hospital official says a Romanian television engineer who dived more than 20 feet (about seven meters) from a balcony onto the floor of Romania's parliament to protest austerity cuts, has undergone an operation for facial fractures.
Catalin Carstoiu, manager at the University Hospital said Adrian Sobaru had the 90-minute surgery early Wednesday. He said the surgery proceeded "without problems" and Sobaru will be discharged from the hospital in a week.
Carstoiu declined to speculate on Sobaru's dramatic protest, saying he was receiving counseling and psychiatric help.
Sobaru was apparently distraught that budget cuts had reduced benefits for his autistic teenage son when he flung himself from the balcony on Dec. 23 during a vote of no-confidence against the government.
