Stranded orca whale freed from New Zealand sandbar

Stranded orca whale freed from New Zealand sandbar

A policeman says volunteers in New Zealand helped refloat a killer whale Wednesday after it stranded on a sandbar while chasing food.
Policeman Perry Griffin says the female killer whale, or orca, beached in an estuary inlet near the northwestern town of Kawhia.
He says the group of about 20 residents and holidaymakers kept the whale wet and then helped refloat the animal when the tide rose.
Griffin says the job was "a bit eerie" because other orca were nearby in the water. But he says whale experts gave assurances that the animals would not attack the rescuers.
