Judge lifts stay on certifying Alaska Senate race

A federal judge has lifted a stay on certification of Alaska's U.S. Senate race, clearing the way for Sen. Lisa Murkowski to be declared the winner.
The decision Tuesday means Alaska state officials likely will make the November election results official on Thursday. If that happens, Murkowski will be sworn in when the new term of Congress convenes next week.
U.S. District Judge Ralph Beistline barred the state from certifying the race last month to allow state courts to rule on Murkowski's Republican rival Joe Miller's challenges to the election, including questions about how write-in ballots were tallied.
The Alaska Supreme Court upheld results favoring Murkowski, and Miller later dropped his objection to Murkowski being seated _ at least initially. But he still hopes to have the election results invalidated and get a recount.
