Jamaica police: Canadian man tried to kill wife

A Canadian tourist in Jamaica has been charged with attempted murder after police accused him of slitting his wife's throat in a rental car and then inventing a phony carjacking story.
Police Superintendent Linette Williams-Martin says 43-year-old Paul Martin appeared Tuesday for a preliminary court hearing in Falmouth, a northern coastal community near the tourist resorts of Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.
His wife, Cathy Lee Martin, of Ajax, Ontario, underwent surgery after the Dec. 23 attack and has been released from a local hospital.
Williams-Martin alleges the man cut his wife's throat after she told him she wished to separate.
A Canadian foreign affairs spokeswoman declined comment.
