Italy mom, 4 children killed in house fire

Firefighters in southern Italy say a house fire fueled by a gas explosion has killed a mother and her four children and injured the father.
Firefighters say the blaze in Benevento, about 70 kilometers from Naples, started while the family was sleeping when a spark from the fireplace ignited a sofa.
Giuseppe Boffa, head of the Telese Terme fire department, said the flames then spread and created a massive explosion when they ignited a gas canister. Such canisters are frequently used in Italian homes without central gas lines for heating or cooking.
Killed were the mother, Genoveffa Vitelli, and her four sons, ages 26, 24 and 3-year-old twins. Boffa said the father and grandfather _ who was sleeping in another part of the house _ managed to escape.
