English National Ballet 英國國家芭蕾舞團 will present Swan Lake 天鵝湖 until August 6 at the National Theater 國家戲劇院 (No. 21-1 Chungshan South Rd., Taipei 台北市中山南路21-1號; Tel: (02) 3393-9999). Derek Deane's lavish production of Swan Lake was premiered in 2000 as a re-working of his hugely successful arena version. Praised by critics and audiences alike, this traditional ballet is sure to capture the heart of everyone who sees it. Swan Lake brings the romance and high drama of the grand Russian ballet tradition alive. Perhaps the most famous of all ballets, it tells the story of Prince Siegfried's love for the Swan Queen, Odette, and their battle against the evil magician, Rothbart. Tchaikovsky's magnificent score, which undoubtedly features some of the most beautiful music in the classical ballet repertoire, is played by the full Orchestra of English National Ballet and the dramatic story line, spectacular sets and costumes and technically brilliant dancing from the Company's 64 dancers make this ballet unmissable. This production runs for approximately three hours including a pause after Act I, and 2 intervals of 20 minutes each. Performances from August 4 to 6 starts at 7:30 p.m., with two matinee performances on August 5 and 6 starting at 2:30 p.m. Tickets range from NT$800 to NT5,800, and are available through the ERA ticket system.
