EU backs freeze on Russian assets for prison death

The European Parliament has voted to freeze the European assets of Russian officials involved in the torture and death in prison of a corporate lawyer.
The EU parliament stopped short of approving another measure denying the officials EU visas.
The parliament has urged Russia to prosecute those responsible for lawyer Sergei Magnitsky's death last year at age 37 when the pancreatitis he developed in jail was left untreated.
The parliament voted 318-163 with 95 abstentions on Thursday to encourage EU law enforcement agencies "in freezing bank accounts and other assets" in Europe of the Russian officials.
The case is being scrutinized as a barometer of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's commitment to the rule of law.
