Israelis building housing at east Jerusalem school

Israeli settlers say they are building new housing at a religious school in east Jerusalem, drawing criticism from anti-settlement activists.
Avi Lerner, spokesman for the school, says work began Wednesday on 18 apartments in three buildings near the Beit Orot school on the Mount of Olives. He said the buildings, which have Israeli permits, will house staff and their families.
Palestinians claim east Jerusalem for their capital and say the settlers' presence is illegal.
Lerner said the buildings will "strengthen the Israeli and Jewish presence in Jerusalem, both on the east and west sides."
Hagit Ofran of the Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now says the project "harms the chances of getting to a peace agreement in Jerusalem."
