2 hostages at French women's center freed

An armed man who took two employees of a women's center hostage in eastern France surrendered to police after a 3 1/2 hour standoff Tuesday, officials said. No one was injured.
The 21-year-old man stormed the women's center in the city of Mulhouse, armed with a gun, in the late morning demanding to speak to his former companion, who was living there, officials said.
When center officials denied his demand, the man took two employees hostage. A special police intervention team was called in from the nearby city of Strasbourg.
Mulhouse mayor Jean Rottner, speaking on BFM TV, said the man was eventually granted a chance to speak to his former companion by telephone, leading to the release of the two captives.
The hostage-taking came a day after a 17-year-old armed with knives held a class of preschoolers hostage in the city of Besancon, also in eastern France. All were freed without injury some four hours later.
