Thai police announce crackdown on passport fakes

Authorities in Thailand say at least some of the suspects arrested this week in Spain and Thailand in connection to an international ring that provided forged passports to terrorists may have passed fake documents to the perpetrators of the 2004 Madrid bombings.
Some 191 people were killed when shrapnel-filled bombs ripped through Madrid's commuter trains during rush hour on March 11, 2004.
Thai authorities said Thursday the 10 suspects _ seven in Spain and three in Thailand _ belong to a group that received stolen passports, doctored them in Thailand and then distributed them to terror groups.
Authorities also said the suspects arrested in Europe had links to Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based terrorist organization blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people.
